The government has formally launched the Sovereign AI Unit at an event hosted by Wayve. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall announced that the first equity investment will be in AI infrastructure startup Callosum.
The Unit is chaired by Balderton partner James Wise, with Josephine Kant leading ventures. It is offering up to one million GPU hours per startup on the AI Research Resource (AIRR) supercomputer network, one-day visa decisions and right-of-first-refusal options on follow-on funding.
Callosum refers to itself as an ‘intelligent systems company’. Its technology routes AI workloads across a mix of chip architectures, reducing the dependence on any single hardware provider and cutting the cost of running large-scale inference. Earlier this year it raised $10.25 million in pre-seed funding led by Plural with support from ARIA
